How to meet the carboNZero Programme Certification
The carboNZeroCertTM programme is a certification scheme administered by Landcare Research. It provides robust tools for individuals, organisations, products, services and events to achieve either carboNZero Certification or CEMARSTM (Certified Emissions Measurement And Reduction Scheme). Both certifications are evidence of the standards met by you as a supplier and AsureQuality, as an Approved Auditor for the carboNZero programme can help you achieve this.
What is the carboNZero Standard?
The carboNZero programme has grown out of over fifteen years of research in greenhouse gases (GHGs) and carbon monitoring at Landcare Research.
It is the first ISO14065 accredited GHG verifier outside the USA and the first GHG certification scheme in the world to achieve international accreditation by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ), which comes under the auspices of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF).
Certification is awarded only after an independent verification audit by authorised verifiers. Ethical and technical oversight is provided by their Independent Advisory Panel. They actively participate in the development of the leading international standards in GHG measurement and reduction.
The carboNZero programme works with individuals, organisations, small enterprises, products, services, conferences and events to help them minimise their impacts on climate change.
Why should your company join the carboNZero programme?
- To demonstrate your commitment to minimising climate change impacts
- To address concerns expressed by customers and stakeholders
- To add value to your organisation, products and services
- To expand marketing opportunities e.g. competitive edge and market access
- To reduce operating costs
- To avoid accusations of "greenwash"

carboNZero certification covers
- Measure: calculate your greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
- Manage: reduce your GHG emissions
- Verify: all clients are required to have an independent verification audit prior to certification
- Mitigate: offset your your remaining unavoidable GHG emissions by purchasing verified carbon credits from credible New Zealand projects
- Market: your GHG credentials
carboNZero certification is available for organisations, small enterprises, conferences, products, services and events wishing to make a carbon neutral claim.
carboNZero small enterprise certification criteria
- A legal entity, not a department or a division of another company
- Located on a single site / office
- With annual GHG emissions less than 50 tonnes CO2e
CEMARS certification covers the following key steps
- Measure: calculate your greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions
- Manage: reduce your GHG emissions
- Verify: all clients are required to have an independent verification audit prior to certification
- Market: your GHG credentials
CEMARS recognises the actions of businesses and organisations who measure their GHG emissions, understand their carbon liabilities, and put in place management plans to reduce emissions in their organisation and more widely through their supply chain.
CEMARS has been developed for organisations who are large emitters and for whom voluntary offsetting or carbon neutral status is not a viable business proposition. Government legislation requires businesses to understand their inherent carbon liabilities and start thinking differently about energy, technology and the economy – CEMARS provides a highly credible solution.
CEMARS certification is available for organisations, industries and manufacturers who are large emitters and for whom offsetting is not a viable business proposition.
