Course description
The Animal Welfare Training course covers animal welfare and how it's applied in employment. The significant advantage of this course is that it offers both comprehensive training and assessment for achieving the appropriate NZQA unit standards. The assessments take into account the candidate’s skills by recognising their prior knowledge and experience.

The Animal Welfare Training course is aimed at training yard supervisors and key staff.
Course content
- Knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act in relation to the meat processing industry
- Knowledge of the meat processing industry regarding procurement of animals for food
- Preparation of stock for slaughter
- Stunning stock using electronic stunner equipment
- Stunning cattle using captive bolt equipment
- Stunning deer using captive bolt equipment
- Animal behaviour and handling
- Use of the captive bolt
The course can be tailored to suit the candidates training needs and can include a range of NZQA standards for a number of species. An additional cost is associated with customisation.
Additional training is available for Animal Behaviour and Handling, and Use of the Captive Bolt. These additional subjects are not NZQA unit standards but can be included where appropriate to supplement training.
Assessment Options
Assessments are written for 20644, supplemented by oral assessment if needed. All other unit standards are practical demonstration and oral assessments.
Unit Standard 20644, Level 3, 5 credits – Demonstrate knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act in relation to the meat processing industry
Unit Standard 17684, Level 3, 4 credits – Demonstrate knowledge of the meat processing industry regarding procurement of animals for food
Unit Standard 21325, Level 2, 15 credits– Prepare stock for slaughter
Unit Standard 21326, Level 2, 4 credits – Stun stock using electronic stunner equipment
Unit Standard 2490, level 2, 4 credits– Stun cattle using captive bolt equipment
Unit Standard 4515, Level 2, 4 credits – Stun deer using captive bolt equipment
Course Duration
A full day course, covering up to four unit standards, is relevant for yard staff.
The course may be modified to an in-depth half-day course on unit standard 20644 (Demonstrate knowledge of the Animal Welfare Act in relation to the meat processing industry) for technical staff who oversee animal welfare.
