National Biosecurity Capability Network (NBCN)
The NBCN is a joint initiative between the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) and AsureQuality. The NBCN is New Zealand's field team in a biosecurity outbreak.
Many different types of organisations from all over New Zealand and with a huge range of skills have already joined the NBCN. In the event of a biosecurity outbreak these organisations will pool their skills together so we have the right field resources at the ready to provide the best response.
MPI & AsureQuality working together
MPI's vision is to grow and protect New Zealand. MPI leads the New Zealand biosecurity system. This encompasses facilitating international trade, protecting the health of New Zealanders and ensuring the welfare of our environment, flora and fauna, marine life and Maori resources.
Visit the MPI biosecurity website (external link) for more information.
AsureQuality are working in partnership with MPI to build a strong, capable network for dealing with biosecurity outbreaks. To build a capable network we need a huge range of skills and resources.
You do not need to have specialist biosecurity experience or services to be a part of the network. Many of the tasks you will have to perform are things you do everyday. These could be waste management, transport logistics, administration, or general labour.
We also require specialist skills which could involve team management, assessing crops and livestock, veterinary work, setting traps and extermination as a few examples.
We all have a part to play in protecting NZ from harmful pests and diseases. As a nation we have a lot to lose. Threats posed by an unwanted pests, diseases or organisms could damage the environment, the economy, and us, the people of New Zealand.
Becoming involved with the NBCN means you will play a part in protecting your community from the financial loss that can occur from a biosecurity outbreak. It will also help keep your region and New Zealand safe for future generations.
